At one point I was sitting at a bar waiting for a table at a genuine supper club, and suddenly two people on either side of me lit up a electric cigarette. “What the….” I thought, and suddenly I remembered–oh yeah, I’m in Wisconsin….It figures that France and Ireland got rid of smoking in public places before Wisconsin.
I never weighed in that heavily on the smoking ban in DSM; as long as restaurants had smoking and nonsmoking sections, I was good. In fact, I kind of liked places like the old Chat Noir, which always attracted this very worldly European crowd smoking it up in and around the bar area. Once Chat Noir went to non-smoking, the Euro crowd moved on, and some of the Chat’s cachet was lost.
